Spotlight

This past week, in Library, our students learned all about rocks. Specifically pet rocks. Pet rocks are wonderful because they don't need to be fed, or watered or walked, but they can still be loved! The students also explored some non-fiction titles to learn about different times of rocks and rock formations. They finished up their library class by creating their own unique and creative pet rocks to take home and love!

In STEAM class, our fourth grade students learned all about light refraction and how when water passes through different mediums it can refract or bend to reveal different colors. To demonstrate this, the students stood outside with cups of water and created refracted rainbows on the sidewalk.

Last week, in order to properly commemorate the completion of the first Perek of Maseches Brachos in Mishna the fifth grade boys participated in a scavenger hunt spread around the TDSA campus. Using their budding Mishnayos skills, the students had to solve a series of riddles that led them to....Rabbi Siff who was waiting with a delicious surprise!

At TDSA we recognize that understanding math isn't just about knowing mathematical concepts or to recite mathematical terms. That's why Mrs. Duval's Middle School Math classes incorporates the thinking classrooms model. As part of class time the students split into independent groups of two and three to solve math problems on giant whiteboards. When working together, the students delve into their reasoning and help each other to conceptualize the math they're learning differently.

This past week, the second grade garden recieved their newest residents: An army of worms. As part of the 2nd grade's enrichment community garden project, the boys and girls are creating a compost bin. Worms are an essential part of composting. Despite how disgusting they are, they're able to breakdown food waste into rich nutritious soil which will help the 2nd graders garden grow big and strong. Go worms go! We can't wait to see composting in action!

TDSA's book club students gathered for their first Book club meetings this week and last week. The students enjoyed delicious hot cocoa and cookies and compared notes and their impressions about the books that they read. The students shared what they enjoyed about the books, what they gained and what sparked their curiosity. They then received their next books to read, which many have already made quite some headway on! They can't wait for their next book club meeting!

This week in Gym, 5G played a new and exciting variation on dodge ball invented by our very own Coach Stevens! Instead of just standing on the side when out, the girls had the opportunity to run across the "canyon" between the two teams and if they made it through without getting hit by the ball, could then rejoin their teams. In addition to being fun, the game also involved a fair amount of strategy to win!

Mazal Tov! Mazal Tov! The second grade girls have completed their first Perek in Chumash and on Wednesday they celebrated their first ever siyum. The siyum was complete with Divrei Torah, yummy treats, balloons and dancing! At TDSA learning Torah is sweet, fun, and exciting! May our second grade continue to grow and learn!

For the last few weeks Kindergarten has been investigating everything there is to know about Pumpkins. The students got a chance to handle real pumpkins. They measured them, guessed if a pumpkin could float and tested their hypothesis (It can!) The students also estimated the number of pumpkin seeds inside a pumpkin and counted them and then rounded out the unit by putting their measuring and counting skills to the test by baking delicious pumpkin muffins!
