Building Bridges in STEAM

How can you make a sheet of paper hold up pennies if you suspend it between two books? This was the challenge posed to TDSA's third grade boys this past week. Like all STEAM challenges in Mrs. Pelishev's class, there was no easy answer and the boys needed to work together to apply the principals of weight distribution and force to figure out ways to keep their pennies suspended and their bridges intact. Many bridges did collapse under the weight of the pennies until the boys uncovered the secret-tubes! By shoring up the underside of the bridge with paper rolled into tubes, the bridges were better able to support the weight of the pennies on top of them!
